During their visit to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) headquarters on Thursday, members of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Climate Change were given a thorough briefing on the nation’s climate-related risks, early warning systems, glacial melt, and the outlook for the forthcoming monsoon rains.
Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, the chairman of the NDMA, told the committee that Pakistan is expected to rank among the top 15 water-stressed nations globally by 2025 and is becoming more and more sensitive to climate change. Additionally, he cautioned that this year’s monsoon season is predicted to bring above-normal rainfall, especially in areas of Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan.
The NDMA chief brought up the possibility of flooding due to glacial melting during the briefing.
