Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed has ordered the Lahore Traffic Police to begin a tough crackdown on motorcycle riders who do not wear helmets.
No rider, even law enforcement officers, will be permitted to use city roads without a helmet starting on Monday.
The CTO sent out a wireless message giving traffic wardens two days to make sure the helmet law is fully enforced. Any warden found to be in violation of this obligation will be disciplined and may lose up to a year of service.
A growing number of motorcycle riders have been involved in fatal traffic incidents, prompting the mandate. Those who are spotted riding without helmets will be penalized as part of the new regulations, and in certain situations, a formal complaint may also be filed.
