A new $2.5 billion investment until 2030 has been made by the Gates Foundation, the charity founded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, to support a new age of women-centered health research and innovation.
According to the statement, the investment — the largest ever in women’s health by the foundation — will support more than 40 innovations in five important areas, notably those affecting women in low- and middle-income nations.
The financing, which was made public through a press release, intends to address the long-standing underfunding of research and development (R&D) related to women’s health.
Only 1% of healthcare research and innovation is allocated to female-specific disorders outside of oncology, according to a 2021 McKinsey & Company estimate.
