BENGALURU/NEW DELHI: In January, police in the Indian city of Satara expressed worry over an old post on Elon Musk’s social media account, X. A key member of the ruling party was called “useless” in a brief comment posted in 2023 by an account with a few hundred followers.
“This post and content are likely to create serious communal tension,” Inspector Jitendra Shahane wrote in a “CONFIDENTIAL” content-removal warning sent to X.
The message is one of hundreds that X mentioned in a complaint it filed against the Indian government in March, contesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration’s widespread crackdown on social media content.
