The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said that a boat capsized in the Mediterranean on Wednesday, killing at least 20 migrants and leaving many more unaccounted for.
Deep sorrow for the umpteenth shipwreck off the coast of Lampedusa, where the survivors are currently receiving aid from UNHCR. Filippo Ungaro, the agency’s spokesperson, posted on social media, “It appears that 20 bodies have been found and an equal number are still missing.”
The catastrophe was confirmed by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who stated that the tragedy happened 14 nautical miles away from Lampedusa.
According to Radio Radicale, 97 persons were on board when the boat capsized.
There were few details available, but according to Save the Children Italy, a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter seems to have vanished into the shipwreck.
