The adult patient, who was the first confirmed instance of measles in Ireland in 2024, passed away in a hospital in the Dublin and Midlands health zone.
This is Ireland’s first confirmed case of measles in 2024.
In the nation, there were two cases of measles in 2022 and four cases in 2023.
According to the HSE, there were five instances reported in 2020, however no deaths were reported in any of those years. No cases were reported in 2021.
The adult passed away in a Midlands and Dublin health region hospital.
“HSE public health teams, along with the HSE measles national incident management team (IMT), are taking all necessary public health actions in relation to the case,” the HSE stated in a statement issued on Wednesday.
“A recent surge in measles cases in the UK and Europe prompted the creation of the HSE measles IMT.
“The HSE will keep the public informed of further measures and, in the meantime, anyone with concerns should contact their GP.”
It follows a warning from the World Health Organization about a “alarming” increase in cases throughout Europe.
In England, there has also been an increase in suspected cases of the illness.
