The 16th National Assembly began on Thursday with the oath-taking of legislators elected on February 8 amid claims of “rigging,” with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif returning to Parliament after more than six years.
Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, the outgoing Speaker, gave the oath to the 302 members of the House.
PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, former President Asif Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman were among the senior politicians who took the oath today, amid objections from Imran Khan’s party members.
The session began with a disturbance as soon as the national song concluded, with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed MPs, who have joined the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), swarming the speaker.
