Even though non-citizens are still prohibited from voting in federal elections, a prominent House Republican is pressuring Washington, D.C. officials to provide information regarding the implementation of a new law enabling them to vote in local elections and potential inducement for them to do so.
Bryan Steil, the chairman of the House Administration Committee, wrote to the D.C. Board of Elections to voice his concerns with the 2022 legislation that is now in place and permits certain non-citizens to cast ballots in local elections. His group is in charge of monitoring electoral procedures.
According to Steil, “American elections are for American citizens only,” in a news statement. “It is not encouraging to see non-citizens voting in local elections in our nation’s capital. Every American deserves to feel confident in their elections.”
