LAHORE: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has chosen to take “an active role in national politics” after regaining the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) presidency last month, sources said News on Monday.
The sources stated that Nawaz made the decision to get more involved in national politics following an almost two-hour discussion that the PML-N president had with senior party leaders, including Khawaja Saad Rafique and Rana Sanaullah.
The political candidate would actively participate in fortifying the current political system in addition to meeting with the leaders and employees of the party more frequently, they said.
Due to the Supreme Court’s ruling in 2017, Nawaz was removed from his position as prime minister and his party’s president in 2018.
The Nawaz-led party took control after the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government was overthrown in April 2022.
The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) parties had the opportunity to hand over power to the PML-N, which was at the time the biggest opposition party. Shehbaz Sharif was chosen to serve as the next premier for the final 1.5 years of the PDM government.
Following this year’s general elections, the Nawaz-led party formed an alliance with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), which helped it win reelection.
