Bruni-Sarkozy faces preliminary allegations of witness tampering and attempting to commit fraud by misleading magistrates looking into her husband’s possible receipt of illicit cash during his 2007 presidential campaign.
Her attorneys stated that during her police interrogation in May, she gave “helpful clarifications and explanations,” but they did not elaborate.
Ziad Takieddine, the witness in question, is crucial to the allegations that Sarkozy got millions.
The French president from 2007 to 2012, Nicolas Sarkozy, has already been found guilty in two earlier instances.
He has vehemently denied any misconduct in each of the instances.
An appeals court in Paris upheld the former president’s guilty verdict in February on his unlawful campaign financing during his unsuccessful 2012 run for reelection.
Sarkozy received a one-year prison term with six months suspended.
The highest court in France, the Court of Cassation, has heard an appeal from his attorneys.
