William Stampfl’s body was found on Friday close to a camp located 17,060 feet above sea level, according to Ancash region authorities, as reported by The Associated Press. When the avalanche happened, the 58-year-old was attempting to ascend Mount Huascaran; the three climbers were presumably murdered.
According to the police, Stampfl’s body and clothes were preserved by the ice and extremely low temperatures. His driver’s license was inside a hip bag that had been similarly preserved by the climate. It states that he lived in Chino.
Following the discovery of Stampfl’s frozen corpse by an American climber en route to the top of Huascaran, the search for his remains commenced last week. After opening the pouch, the climber looked at the driver’s license and saw his name. He called Stampfl’s family, who subsequently contacted nearby mountain guides.
Thirteen mountaineers took part in the recovery effort, including eight guides from Grupo Alpamayo, a local tour company that transports climbers to Huascaran and other Andean summits, and five cops from an elite police unit.
