KARACHI: The Mass Communication Department of Karachi University, the former home of numerous Pakistani journalists, caught fire on Monday.
Around 10:00 in the morning, a fire broke out in the department’s audio-visual room. Two fire tenders participated in the rescue effort and put out the fire.
Professor Dr. Asmat Ara, the chair of the mass communication department, verified to tv that a class was in session when the air conditioner in the audio-visual room caught fire.

The chairwoman reported that as soon as the fire broke out, the pupils were taken out.
She did see, though, that the students’ strength was rather lower than usual.
“The AC was completely burnt and later the fire spread into the room and damaged chairs and tables [as well],” she stated.
Dr. Ara said, “The department’s employees attempted to put out the fire at first, and later the university’s fire rescue and campus security personnel joined them.”
