Iran has come under fire from US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield for “supplying advanced weapons systems to the Houthis.”
She said at a UNSC meeting that Tehran had given the ballistic, cruise, and drone missiles to the armed group based in Yemen, and that these weapons had been used to attack ships in the Red Sea.
“Iran also has a choice: to continue providing or withhold its support for the Houthis, without which the Houthis would struggle to effectively track and strike vessels through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden,” she said. The US is aware that Iran is involved in the planning of Houthi attacks, but it is not looking to confront Tehran.
On Wednesday, Thomas-Greenfield warned the council that “there will be consequences if the Houthi attacks continue.”
