The illegal felling of valuable Shisham trees (Indian rosewood) in Mardan has resulted in the dismissal and fines of Meher Badshah, a regional officer of the forest department, being affirmed by the Supreme Court.
The three-member bench, presided over by Pakistan’s Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, rejected Badshah’s appeal and upheld the disciplinary measures imposed on him.
The Supreme Court voiced grave concerns about the issue of the nation’s growing deforestation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the hearing. The court stated that substantial adverse environmental effects, such as landslides and floods, are being brought on by deforestation.
The Supreme Court said, “Forests are being cut down with the connivance of the authorities.”
