In a Lahore cafe with floor to ceiling windows featuring the Palestinian flag, I began reading Faisal Devji’s 2013 book Muslim Zion. Periodically, when Devji’s weak claims that Pakistan was the Israel of the Muslim world and the Indian subcontinent most enraged me, I would glance up at it.
I don’t think that Pakistan is a Muslim Israel, so I can’t say that I approached the book with objectivity, but I did think that Devji’s book would have at least made me wonder about some of the similarities between Pakistan and Israel or at least convinced me that things weren’t quite as black and white.
