Due to what Jonathan Freedland called a “great disgrace” at the London-based daily, Hadley Freeman, David Aaronovitch, and Jonathan Freedland announced they were leaving their articles.
It follows the Journal-Journal’s announcement that it “thoroughly investigated” Elon Perry, one of its freelance journalists, “after allegations were made about aspects of his record.”
It declared that it was “not satisfied” with many of the writer’s assertions and, as a result, had removed his pieces and severed its ties to him.
According to Jonathan Freedland, who called the claims fake, the JC had only exhibited the “thinnest form of contrition.”.
Hadley Freeman stated that she couldn’t stay due to recent events, and Aaronovitch agreed, saying he had also quit the paper.
“Why some columnists have decided to step back from the paper” is something that JC editor Jake Wallis Simons acknowledged on Sunday.
He posted on X, the former Twitter platform, saying, “I appreciate their contributions and hope that some of them may feel able to return in due course.
I acknowledge that I made mistakes, and I also pledge to bear equal responsibility for ensuring that something similar never happens again.
It is every newspaper editor’s worst fear, according to Wallis Simons.
