Numerous other sources claimed that 5,000 beepers were carried into Lebanon in the spring, but the senior source added that the militant group had ordered them.
The same source asserted that Israel’s intelligence organization had “at the production level” altered the devices.
Up to 3 g of explosives were concealed in the new pagers, which went “undetected” by Hezbollah for months, a second security source told Reuters.
The Reuters report’s details match those of a news story that also included quotes from American and other authorities.
Photos of the damaged devices that Reuters examined revealed stickers and a layout matching the Taiwan-based business Gold Apollo’s AR-924 pager model.
According to the company’s creator, Hsu Ching-Kuang, the devices were actually manufactured in Europe under license by BAC under the Gold Apollo brand.
The company released the following statement to News in Taiwan: “Apollo Gold Corporation and BAC have established a long-term private label authorization and regional agency cooperation.”
