The Islamabad High Court (IHC) is considering a challenge to the rule that prohibits peaceful assembly without authorization in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT).
After hearing the citizen’s request, Chief Justice Aamir Farooq of the Islamabad High Court sent notices to the federation and the law secretary, requested a response, and called on Attorney General Mansoor Usman for help.
The petitioner maintained that the right to peaceful protest is inalienable to all citizens and cannot be restricted. “Assembly is subject to permission everywhere in the world, including Europe and the UK,” the IHC CJ said.
Three years in prison is the penalty for breaking the law, according to the petitioner’s attorney. Chief Justice Amir Farooq, they can argue that a three-year sentence violates fundamental rights.
