The University of Karachi is witnessing its sixth day of protests after the talks between student leaders and Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Iraqi broke down without a settlement.
Under the banner of a student alliance, thousands of students have gone on strike to express their dissatisfaction with a number of issues, such as excessive fee increases, inadequate transportation options, failing infrastructure, and security concerns on campus.
Canteens and other university facilities were shut down as a result of the protests, which have crippled campus life. Students marched to the streets, screaming anti-administration slogans.
What demands do the students have?
Students argue that the annual 10% fee rise and 50% increase in late fees are unsustainable in light of the deteriorating quality of education and services. This is one of the key causes of dispute.
