Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani said New York City is “on the verge of making history” as he voted in the city’s mayoral race on Tuesday. The 34-year-old progressive expressed confidence that his campaign could usher in a new era, leaving behind the “politics of the past.”
Speaking outside a polling station in Astoria, Queens, Mamdani said, “We are on the brink of change, and I believe victory itself will be a mandate from the people.”
Early voting saw a record turnout of over 735,000 ballots. In the latest polls, Mamdani leads with roughly 44%, ahead of former governor Andrew Cuomo, who is now running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary.
Mamdani, a self-described socialist and State Assembly member, gained attention with a grassroots campaign focusing on affordability and connecting directly with voters through casual street interactions and social media clips.
He is competing against Cuomo, 67, and Republican Curtis Sliwa, 71, who trails far behind. The race has drawn national attention after President Trump criticized Mamdani, labeling him a “Jew hater,” and threatened to withhold federal funding if he becomes mayor.
Responding to the attacks, Mamdani said he would not be intimidated and vowed to use every available tool to serve New Yorkers.
Supporters believe Mamdani represents all New Yorkers. Gregory Jones, 36, said, “We need a mayor who can support working families, immigrants, and underrepresented communities, making New York safe, healthy, and welcoming for everyone.”
