Over 60 members of the US House of Representatives have urged President Joe Biden to utilize Washington’s influence with Islamabad to secure the release of Imran Khan, the imprisoned founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Following his conviction in the Toshakhana criminal case and subsequent sentence in other instances prior to the February 8 elections, the PTI founder has been incarcerated since August of last year. He disputes the accusations.
The Democratic congressmen urged President Biden in their letter to make human rights a top priority in US policy toward Pakistan.
“We’re writing to ask you to use the significant influence the US has over Pakistan’s government to secure the release of political prisoners, including former Prime Minister Khan, and to limit widespread human rights violations.”
