US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed cautious optimism after productive talks in Florida between US and Ukrainian officials aimed at finding a peace solution to the ongoing war with Russia. The discussions focused on ensuring Ukraine remains sovereign and independent, even as significant hurdles persist.
Rubio emphasized that while achieving peace is challenging, both sides share a vision of a prosperous and secure future for Ukraine. The talks followed two weeks of negotiations based on a US peace blueprint, which critics initially argued leaned in favor of Russia.
Representing the US were special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law. Witkoff is scheduled to meet Russian officials later this week to continue the discussions. Rubio acknowledged the complexity of the process, noting the importance of Russia’s participation in reaching a viable agreement.
The leadership on the Ukrainian side recently changed, with Rustem Umerov, national security council secretary, taking over negotiations after the resignation of Andriy Yermak amid a domestic corruption scandal. Umerov praised US support, calling the discussions “productive” and emphasizing the significance of the talks for the Ukrainian people.
The meetings were held at Shell Bay near Miami, a private club developed by Witkoff’s real estate company. Ukraine’s delegation also built upon proposals discussed in Geneva earlier, countering terms that were seen as favorable to Moscow.
As Ukraine faces internal political pressures and ongoing attacks on its energy infrastructure, Zelenskiy remains committed to avoiding unfavorable compromises while seeking a sustainable path to peace.
