Antonio Guterres urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a peace agreement “in line with the UN Charter, international law, and UN General Assembly resolutions” as he was present at a BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.
“We all need peace,” he told the summit attendees. Ukraine must be at peace.
It follows President Xi Jinping’s assertion on Wednesday that China and Brazil, another BRICS member, have proposed a peace proposal to end the conflict in Ukraine.
During the three-day conference, he informed Mr. Putin and other leaders that they want to mobilize additional international backing in the hopes of bringing about conflict.
We must adhere to the three fundamental principles—no escalation of hostilities, no expansion of battlefields, and no fanning of flames—and work toward a prompt de-escalation of the situation, Mr. Xi stated.
Brazil, Russia, India, and China came together to form the BRIC coalition in 2009. The following year, South Africa joined, and the group was renamed BRICS.
