Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that Trump Greenland NATO tensions could escalate after President Donald Trump suggested annexing Greenland. She said any U.S. attack on a NATO member would break the alliance and undermine decades of security cooperation.
Denmark Takes Threats Seriously
Frederiksen told Danish media that Trump’s remarks about Greenland must be taken seriously. “If the United States attacks another NATO country, everything stops, including our NATO commitments,” she said.
Trump Cites Security Reasons
Trump argued that the U.S. needs Greenland for national security. White House officials reinforced this, saying Greenland should belong to the United States to secure NATO interests in the Arctic.
European Leaders Push Back
European and Nordic leaders, including Finland’s president and Norway’s prime minister, stressed that Greenland’s future belongs to Denmark and its people. They said Trump’s Greenland NATO comments risk straining relations between allies.
Greenland Demands Respect
Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen responded that Greenland is a democratic nation, not an object of superpower politics. “Threats and talk of annexation do not belong between friends,” he said.
