DCCC Adds Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, South Carolina, and Virginia to Offensive List
House Democrats are stepping up their 2026 midterm strategy by targeting five additional Republican-held districts in Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, South Carolina, and Virginia. As a result, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) now lists 44 districts as potential pickups for the party, aiming to reclaim the House majority.
Notably, all five new districts were carried by former President Trump by 13 points or less in 2024, signaling potential swing opportunities for Democrats. Republicans currently hold a slim 218-214 majority, with a few vacancies and competitive seats still in play. Therefore, Democrats need just three net gains to retake control of the chamber.
Momentum and Political Headwinds
Despite polling challenges, Democrats have seen consistent victories in 2025 elections and special contests, bolstered by a focus on affordability issues like healthcare, housing, groceries, and energy bills. Meanwhile, Republicans face typical midterm headwinds for the party in power, compounded by Trump’s low approval ratings and public dissatisfaction with the economy.
DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene highlighted the party’s strategy:
“Democrats are on offense. Americans are tired of Republicans’ broken promises and ready for change. Rising costs for everyday necessities are hitting families because Republican policies favor the wealthy few.”
Furthermore, DelBene emphasized that Democrats are entering the midterms with strong candidates, a clear message, and public support, positioning them to win a new House majority under Speaker Hakeem Jeffries.
Republican Pushback
However, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) dismissed the Democrats’ plan as unrealistic. Spokesman Mike Marinella criticized the DCCC’s strategy, arguing that Democrats face fundraising shortfalls, weak incumbents, and primary battles producing unelectable candidates. In contrast, the NRCC is focusing on 29 vulnerable Democratic districts in 2026.
Key Target Districts
Specifically, the DCCC’s new offensive list includes:
- Colorado’s 5th CD – GOP Rep. Jeff Crank won by 14 points in 2024.
- Minnesota’s 1st CD – GOP Rep. Brad Finstad seeks re-election.
- Montana’s 1st CD – GOP Rep. Ryan Zinke running again.
- Virginia’s 5th CD – GOP Rep. John McGuire running for another term.
- South Carolina’s 1st CD – Open seat as GOP Rep. Nancy Mace runs for governor.
By adding these districts, Democrats hope to expand opportunities and leverage competitive races to flip control of the House.
