DHS funding backlash helps Democrats take a hard line on ICE and agency funding
Amid growing DHS funding backlash, Americans are increasingly critical of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. This shift is giving Democrats more confidence to oppose another short-term funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security.
Days before the Friday funding deadline, several Senate Democrats said they will not support a continuing resolution to prevent a DHS shutdown, citing the backlash over ICE enforcement actions as a key reason.
Differences From Last Fall
King noted the current situation differs from last fall, when a shutdown would have affected programs like food stamps, medical care, and research funding. “Now, if DHS isn’t funded, ICE, TSA, the Coast Guard, and FEMA could be forced to shut down,” he explained.
Public Opinion Turns Against Trump’s Immigration Policies
Recent polling shows Americans increasingly oppose the administration’s immigration approach. A Quinnipiac University survey conducted Jan. 29 to Feb. 2 found only 38% of registered voters approve of President Trump’s handling of immigration, while 59% disapprove. ICE receives even lower marks, with 63% of respondents expressing disapproval.
The mounting criticism from both the public and lawmakers signals heightened scrutiny of DHS operations and could shape the next round of budget negotiations.
