Bondi Confirms DOJ Received Referral
Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed on Wednesday that the Department of Justice received a criminal referral from the House Judiciary Committee. The referral alleges former CIA Director John Brennan provided false testimony to Congress regarding the Steele dossier.
Bondi made the statement during a hearing before the committee, responding directly to Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who asked if Brennan would face indictment.
“What I can confirm is that we have received a referral from you, Chairman Jordan, to investigate John Brennan,” Bondi said.
DOJ Investigation Ongoing
Bondi added that the DOJ is still bound by policy not to discuss ongoing matters. She stated she could neither confirm nor deny a pending investigation. “No one is above the law. Weaponization has ended,” she added.
The referral from Jordan, sent in October, focuses on Brennan’s testimony about the Steele dossier. The document contained unverified negative claims about former President Donald Trump. It also played a role in an Obama-era Intelligence Community Assessment on Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.
Subpoenas and Related Investigations
The DOJ has been investigating Brennan and other officials, including former FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page. A grand jury subpoenaed them as part of the inquiry. Brennan’s attorneys criticized the DOJ for “forum shopping” by seeking judges in Republican-leaning courts in Florida.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe also asked the DOJ to prosecute Brennan over broader conspiracy allegations connected to the 2016 probe.
Political Reactions
Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., noted President Trump’s past comments about targeting political adversaries. “If we want to know whether Mr. Brennan will be indicted, you should just ask the president,” Goldman said.
Last summer, Trump called Brennan and others “dishonest” and “crooked as hell,” suggesting they might have to face consequences for their actions.
