Scott Bessent has been nominated by Donald Trump to head the US Treasury Department, one of the most powerful positions in the government, which has broad authority over international finance, tax policy, public debt, and sanctions.
As the president-elect puts together his team for a second term, the selection marks the conclusion of what has turned out to be one of the more drawn-out choices.
Bessent, a former George Soros employee and Wall Street financier, was a strong supporter of Trump’s 2024 campaign and has a quite traditional background to the position.
