At a special investiture ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad on Thursday, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif jointly handed the field marshal’s baton to Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
General Munir was promoted to field marshal by the federal government on Tuesday in appreciation of his outstanding leadership throughout Pakistan’s recent military conflicts with India and the successful completion of “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos.”
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presided over a federal cabinet meeting where the decision was made. In order to ensure national security and destroy the enemy via the most effective strategy and bravery during “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos,” the government authorized COAS Gen. Munir’s promotion to the rank of field marshal.
