A live voter panel showed a sharp partisan split when President Donald Trump spoke about his cartel crackdown and fentanyl policy during his State of the Union address.
Polling firm Maslansky and Partners assembled 29 Democrats, 30 Independents and 40 Republicans to track reactions in real time. When Trump outlined his actions against cartels in Central and South America, Republicans and Independents reacted positively. Democrats dipped slightly below their starting baseline.
Partisan Divide Over Cartel Strategy
Trump said violent cartels control large areas in the region, including parts of Mexico. He reminded lawmakers that he labeled several cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. He also classified illicit fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction.
Republicans responded strongly when he described air and maritime strikes on cartel networks. Independents also showed steady support. Democrats, however, showed less enthusiasm, especially when he mentioned bombing operations in waters near South America and the eastern Pacific.
El Mencho Operation and U.S. Support
Trump pointed to the killing of Ruben Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Mexican forces carried out the raid in Tapalpa. U.S. officials said American intelligence and coordination helped make the mission possible.
On his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order directing the State Department to designate several cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. That order expanded surveillance powers and strengthened material support prosecutions. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel was among the groups listed.
Attorney General Pam Bondi later issued a memo that directed Justice Department staff to pursue what she called total elimination of cartel networks.
Broader Enforcement Actions
The administration launched repeated strikes on cartel boats in 2025 and 2026. U.S. forces also carried out non lethal maritime drug interdiction missions during that period.
In early 2026, U.S. authorities captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and extradited him to New York on drug trafficking and narco terrorism charges. Trump accused him of leading a large criminal network tied to cartel activity.
Recent violence connected to cartel operations disrupted travel in parts of Mexico. After the operation against El Mencho, some American tourists reported being stranded. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the State Department now handles hundreds of calls each day from Americans seeking guidance.
The live dial results suggest Trump’s hard line approach energizes many Republicans and appeals to Independents. However, it does not draw the same level of support from Democratic voters.
