A Year of Grief and Remembrance
Families across India gathered on Friday to mark one year since the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171, one of the country’s deadliest aviation disasters. Prayer meetings, candlelight vigils, and memorial services were held in different cities as loved ones remembered the 260 people who lost their lives in the heartbreaking incident.
The London-bound flight crashed just seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad, striking a nearby medical college and causing widespread destruction. The disaster claimed the lives of 241 passengers and crew members on board, along with 19 people on the ground. Only one passenger survived the crash.
Investigation Continues Without Final Answers
One year later, investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the accident. Officials confirmed that they are carefully reviewing all available evidence through a comprehensive investigation.
Authorities stated that a final report will be released once the analysis is complete. The Civil Aviation Ministry also expressed its condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirmed its commitment to uncovering the truth while improving aviation safety standards.
Ahmedabad Still Bears the Scars
The crash site in Ahmedabad remains sealed off, serving as a painful reminder of the devastating event. Burned buildings still stand in the area, while flowers, photographs, handwritten notes, and tributes have transformed the location into an emotional memorial.
Many grieving families visited the site carrying framed pictures of their loved ones. Some stood silently in prayer, while others embraced one another as emotions overwhelmed them.
Remembering 12-Year-Old Akash Patni
Among those remembered was 12-year-old Akash Patni, who tragically lost his life while helping at his family’s tea stall when the aircraft crashed nearby.
His relatives gathered at the memorial with his photograph decorated with flower garlands and surrounded by rose petals. Akash’s mother, Sitaben, who suffered severe burn injuries during the incident, returned to the site for the first time since the tragedy.
She joined family members in offering prayers and reciting Hindu hymns, making the anniversary an especially emotional moment after spending weeks recovering in hospital following the accident.
Families Continue to Seek Closure
For many families, the first anniversary has reopened painful memories rather than bringing closure. Although twelve months have passed, the emotional wounds remain fresh, and many relatives continue to wait for clear answers about what caused the fatal crash.
As memorial ceremonies continue across the country, families hope the ongoing investigation will eventually provide accountability, clarity, and lessons that help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
