Two neighbours divided by Belfast peace wall turn barriers into friendship Physical wall turns short distance into long walk Lily Brannon, 73, and Michelle Bradley, 46, live in Belfast on opposite sides of a peace wall that separates the Springfield and Springmartin Road areas. Their homes are only about two minutes apart on foot. Because of the wall, the journey between them takes around 20 to 30 minutes. These peace lines exist across parts of Belfast to separate some Catholic nationalist and Protestant unionist communities. Friendship formed through cross community project The two women met through a cross community programme in west Belfast. The initiative runs at the Black Mountain Shared Space building and is supported by the International Fund for Ireland peace barriers programme. At first, both felt cautious. Michelle remembers a sense of reservation. Lily describes it as suspicion. That early tension faded as they spent more time together. From fear to trust Lily grew up before the Troubles, the decades of conflict that ended with the 1998 peace agreement. Michelle was born during the 1980s, when violence was still widespread. Michelle says she did not grow up with hate, but with fear of what she did not know. She believed people on the other side might already dislike her, even without meeting them. Strong bond despite history Over time, the two women built a close friendship. Lily now speaks warmly about Michelle and says she is someone she can rely on. Michelle has also formed a strong bond with Lily. Their relationship shows how everyday contact can reduce long held fears between communities that have been divided for decades. The International Fund for Ireland, which supports this kind of work, is marking 40 years of cross community efforts.

A South Carolina court has overturned the murder conviction of former lawyer Alex Murdaugh. He was convicted in 2023 for killing his wife Maggie and son Paul. The state Supreme Court has now ordered a new trial. Court decision The South Carolina Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling, 5 to 0, in favor of a new trial. The judges said Murdaugh did not receive a fair trial because of outside influence on the jury. Murdaugh is currently serving two life sentences for the murders. He is also serving additional prison terms for financial crimes at both state and federal level. Reason for new trial The court found that the Colleton County Clerk of Court, Rebecca Hill, improperly influenced the jury. The judges said her actions affected the fairness of the trial. Hill has already pleaded guilty to misconduct, obstruction of justice, and perjury. She admitted to sharing sealed information and misusing public funds. Claims of jury influence The ruling included statements from jurors who said Hill made comments during the trial. One juror said she was told to watch Murdaugh closely, which affected how she viewed the case. Other jurors reported being told not to trust the defense and to avoid being misled by evidence presented in court. Some also said Hill suggested the case should not take long during deliberations. Background of the case Murdaugh was once a powerful attorney in South Carolina. His criminal trial lasted six weeks and received global attention. The case involved the shooting deaths of his wife and son near the family property. After his conviction, the case became widely covered through documentaries, podcasts, and books. The trial was also broadcast publicly. Hill later published a book about the case, but it was later withdrawn after plagiarism concerns.

China urged to ease food and fertiliser stockpiles amid global supply strain Key concerns over global shortages Former World Bank president David Malpass has called on China to reduce its large reserves of food and fertiliser to help ease growing pressure on global supply chains. He made the remarks ahead of a high level meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing. Malpass said China holds the largest global stock of food and fertiliser materials and argued that easing these reserves could help stabilise markets during a period of disruption caused by conflict affecting key shipping routes. Fertiliser supply disruptions deepen crisis Global fertiliser supplies have been under strain as transport routes face interruptions linked to conflict in the Middle East. Experts warn that reduced availability of fertiliser could significantly lower agricultural output worldwide. Industry leaders estimate that the disruption could threaten billions of meals each week and place the greatest burden on low income countries that depend heavily on imported food and fertiliser. One major fertiliser industry executive has warned that lower usage could reduce crop yields and trigger competition among countries for limited food supplies. China’s export limits under scrutiny China has restricted exports of several fertiliser types since March, stating that it aims to secure domestic supply. These controls add to earlier limits introduced over recent years. The country plays a major role in global fertiliser production, contributing around a quarter of worldwide output. Its exports previously generated more than thirteen billion dollars annually. Malpass criticised Beijing for continuing to present itself as a developing economy despite its position as the world second largest economy. He suggested that China should reconsider its status in global institutions such as the World Trade Organization and international financial bodies. China responds to criticism A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington said China remains committed to supporting stability in global food and fertiliser markets. The statement added that the causes of current supply disruptions should not be attributed solely to China. Global implications ahead of diplomatic talks The comments come as international leaders prepare for discussions aimed at addressing trade tensions, supply chain instability, and energy security concerns. Fertiliser availability and food security are expected to be key topics during the meeting.

Hantavirus Outbreak Reported on Atlantic Cruise Ship Incident Overview Health authorities have reported a serious hantavirus situation on a cruise ship sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel, MV Hondius operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, was traveling from Argentina toward Cape Verde when multiple passengers fell ill. Three people have died during the incident. A Dutch married couple and a German passenger were among the deceased. Officials have confirmed two hantavirus cases so far, including a Dutch woman who later died after leaving the ship. Investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the remaining deaths. Two crew members also developed breathing related symptoms while on board. One showed mild illness and the other required urgent medical attention. What Is Hantavirus Hantavirus refers to a group of viruses carried mainly by rodents. Humans usually become infected when they breathe in particles contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. This virus does not typically spread from person to person. Infection usually happens in environments where rodent activity is present and contaminated dust becomes airborne. People may also get infected through rodent bites or scratches, but this is less common. How the Virus Spreads The main transmission route involves inhalation of infected particles in the air. When dried rodent waste is disturbed, it can release virus particles into the environment. Risk increases in enclosed or poorly cleaned areas where rodents live or have lived. Travel environments, storage areas, or remote locations can increase exposure risk if rodent control is weak. Symptoms and Health Risks Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome This form affects the lungs. Early signs include fever, fatigue, and muscle pain. As the illness progresses, patients may experience headaches, dizziness, chills, and stomach discomfort. Breathing problems can develop suddenly. In severe cases, the condition becomes life threatening. Health data shows a high death rate once respiratory symptoms begin. Hemorrhagic Fever with Kidney Complications This form affects the kidneys and blood vessels. Symptoms may include low blood pressure, bleeding inside the body, and kidney failure. It can become severe without fast medical care. Current Cases Under Investigation A 69 year old British passenger is currently in intensive care in South Africa and has tested positive for hantavirus. The Dutch woman who died after leaving the ship also tested positive. Health officials are still testing crew members who showed respiratory symptoms. Results have not yet confirmed whether they are infected with the virus.

The Japanese Rugby Football Union confirmed the decision, saying the behaviour was serious enough to require strong disciplinary action under his contract. Jones has been removed from duty for six weeks and will miss Japan’s next four matches, including the opening Nations Championship fixture against Italy on 4 July. He will also be absent for two matches against a Hong Kong China Select team and a warm up game against the Maori All Blacks. The union has also reduced his salary as part of the punishment. Jones Issues Apology Jones accepted the sanction and expressed regret over his conduct. He said his remarks caused discomfort to local officials and others involved, and he apologised for the incident. The 66 year old acknowledged responsibility and said he understood the impact of his behaviour. Background and Recent Incidents Japan’s under 23 squad completed the tour with three wins from four matches, including a strong 38 to 21 victory over Randwick, a club closely linked to Jones’ coaching history. Commercial fishing boat working in the North Atlantic as debate grows over U.S. seafood and national security

Domestic Fishing Is Critical to U.S. Food Security

I have spent my life working at sea as a commercial fisherman. Now, as chairman and chief strategist of the New England Fishermen’s Stewardship Association, I represent fishermen across the North Atlantic and the New York Bight. I also speak for their families, coastal businesses, and communities that depend on wild caught American seafood.

Fishermen see real ocean conditions every day. We do not rely on delayed reports or distant theories. Yet too often, federal policy favors paperwork over practical results. Decisions made in Washington directly affect safety, fish stocks, and whether small businesses survive. On the water, bad policy can put lives and livelihoods at risk.

In 2026, it is time to state a simple truth: American wild caught seafood is a pillar of national food security. The United States controls one of the largest ocean resources in the world. Our fishermen harvest it under strict environmental and labor standards. As a result, we provide safe and sustainable food for the country.

Imports and Offshore Wind Threaten Working Waters

At the same time, American fishermen compete with low cost seafood imports. Many of these products come from countries with weak oversight and questionable labor practices. Still, they are often labeled as sustainable or fresh. Meanwhile, U.S. harvesters who follow strict rules struggle to stay afloat.

Farmers face similar challenges. Domestic producers meet high standards, yet imports often undercut them. Fishermen deserve the same level of protection and recognition. Any serious food policy must strengthen domestic seafood production and ensure fair competition.

In addition, offshore wind projects are reshaping fishing grounds. These developments displace fishermen, alter habitats, and introduce permanent industrial structures into active waters. Supporters call it progress. However, many fishermen see long term damage to ocean ecosystems and maritime safety.

There are also security concerns. Large turbine fields can interfere with marine radar and search and rescue systems. When equipment fails at sea, lives are at stake. Infrastructure that weakens safety systems does not belong in working waters.

Fixing Groundfish Through Better Science

New England’s groundfish fishery remains unstable. Quotas swing sharply from year to year, often based on incomplete surveys. A stock may appear strong one season and restricted the next. Yet fishermen on the water sometimes see healthy populations that surveys miss.

When regulators close or restrict a fishery, crews cannot easily shift to another one. Boats stay docked. Workers lose income. Coastal communities suffer even when fish remain plentiful offshore.

Confidence in management starts with better assessments. That means closer cooperation between scientists and fishermen. Industry based research, where crews work directly with researchers, has proven effective in other regions. On the West Coast, long term partnerships have improved data quality and reduced uncertainty.

A Choice for the Nation

The country faces a clear choice. Policymakers can continue sidelining domestic fishermen while expanding imports and industrial ocean projects. Or they can prioritize American food producers and protect working waterfronts.

Recent federal actions have recognized domestic seafood as a matter of national interest. That recognition must translate into consistent policy support. With practical leadership and science grounded in real world experience, American fisheries can remain sustainable and strong.

Commercial fishermen are ready to do the work. Given fair rules and steady support, they can feed American families, strengthen coastal economies, and reinforce national resilience.
