Alzheimer’s Drugs May Offer Limited Patient Benefit, New Analysis Finds High Cost and Limited Access Raise Questions A new independent analysis has found that so called breakthrough Alzheimer’s drugs are unlikely to deliver meaningful benefits for most patients. Researchers say the impact remains far below what is needed to improve daily life for people living with dementia. These drugs are approved in several countries. However, they are not funded by the NHS in the UK. Private treatment can cost around £90,000 for an 18 month course, making them unaffordable for most patients. How the Drugs Work The treatment targets a sticky substance called beta amyloid. This protein builds up between brain cells in Alzheimer’s disease and is linked to memory loss and cognitive decline. Scientists designed antibodies to identify and remove this protein from the brain. These antibodies work in a similar way to natural immune defenses that fight infections. Mixed Results From Clinical Trials Early attempts to remove amyloid failed to show results. More recent trials involving donanemab and lecanemab showed a small slowing of cognitive decline. Researchers described this as an important scientific step. It was the first time any treatment had shown an ability to slow brain deterioration in Alzheimer’s disease. Large Review Finds Limited Benefit The Cochrane Collaboration reviewed data from 17 studies involving more than 20,000 participants. The review found that amyloid removing drugs do slow the disease. However, the improvement was too small to make a noticeable difference in patients’ everyday lives. Safety Risks and Treatment Burden The drugs are also linked to serious side effects. Some patients experienced brain swelling and bleeding during treatment. In addition, the therapy requires regular infusions every two to four weeks. This creates a long term treatment burden for patients and healthcare systems. Scientific Debate Continues The findings have triggered disagreement among scientists. Deathly attack on Iranian Warship On 4 March, a US sub launched a torpedo at the Iranian navy vessel Iris Dena. This attack took place about 40 km off the southern coast of Sri Lanka. A powerful explosion caused by the strike sank a ship. The attack claimed the lives of 104 sailors. Rescue teams later recovered 84 corpses. Iran chartered a plane to take them home.
