Taiwan President Visits Eswatini Despite China Travel Pressure Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te has arrived in Eswatini, just days after his government said a planned trip faced disruption. Officials claimed China pressured several African nations to block his transit through their airspace. Despite these hurdles, Lai confirmed that his team managed the visit through careful planning. He did not share specific details about how he reached Eswatini but praised the efforts of his diplomatic and security teams. Only African Ally Strengthens Ties Eswatini remains Taiwan’s only diplomatic ally in Africa. The visit highlights the strong relationship between the two nations. Prime Minister Russell Dlamini welcomed Lai with a formal ceremony, including a guard of honour. Taiwan’s delegation included Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and National Security Council adviser Alex Huang. This visit continues a pattern of engagement between the two countries. Previous Taiwanese leaders have also visited Eswatini to maintain diplomatic ties. China Criticizes the Visit China strongly reacted to the trip. Officials described Lai’s visit as a “stowaway-style escape farce.” Beijing continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory and rejects any official international engagement by Taiwanese leaders. China often pressures countries to limit or cut ties with Taiwan. This has reduced Taiwan’s diplomatic allies in recent years. United States Calls Visit Routine The United States responded by downplaying the situation. A State Department spokesperson said the visit was routine and should not become politicized. The spokesperson added that every democratically elected Taiwanese president travels abroad to meet allies. Former President Tsai Ing-wen visited Eswatini in both 2018 and 2023. The US also highlighted Taiwan’s global role. It described Taiwan as a reliable partner that brings economic and social benefits to countries like Eswatini. Rising Tensions in Global Diplomacy This visit reflects ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China. While Taiwan seeks to strengthen its global partnerships, China continues efforts to isolate it diplomatically. Lai’s successful visit shows that Taiwan is still able to maintain and grow key alliances despite external pressure.

The airline says rising fuel prices have made many routes too expensive to operate. Jet fuel prices have sharply increased since the start of the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran. The situation has slowed production and disrupted supply routes across the Middle East. Airlines Pass Costs to Travelers Other major airlines, including Air France–KLM and Delta Air Lines, have also reduced some flights. At the same time, many carriers have raised ticket prices to cover higher costs. Industry experts warn that ticket prices may continue to rise. Travelers could also face more cancellations if the situation does not improve. Middle East Supply Disruptions Impact Europe The Middle East plays a key role in global jet fuel supply. It provides about half of Europe’s aviation fuel imports. Much of this supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has restricted access to this route in response to recent military actions. This has caused delays and reduced fuel availability. The International Energy Agency recently warned that Europe could face jet fuel shortages within weeks. However, UK officials and airlines say they have not yet seen major supply disruptions. Lufthansa Adjusts Network Strategy Lufthansa confirmed it will scale down its European routes. However, it will continue to operate long-haul international flights. The airline said this move will improve efficiency and reduce fuel use. It expects to save around 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel. Fleet Changes and Route Cuts The airline has also decided to speed up the closure of its CityLine operations. It plans to retire 27 aircraft as part of this move. Lufthansa said higher fuel costs and ongoing labor issues influenced this decision. Some of the first route cuts have already started. These include flights from Frankfurt to cities in Poland and Norway.

People had arrived early the previous night to get a prime spot. As Pope Francis entered his Popemobile in the Vatican, thousands of people cheered and waved flags. They also captured the moment with their smartphones. A message of unity and peace The Pope's focus during the Mass was on the promotion of peace, community development, and discipline. The Pope urged the young to make good use of their talent and not choose harmful things. He warned people against violent acts and grabbing for quick gain that can harm society. He urged people to be honest and strive for progress. The message was sent shortly after his trip to the Anglophone Cameroon region which has been ravaged by conflict for many years. After hearing him speak, many attendees felt hopeful. Artificial Intelligence Risks In Yaounde the Pope raised concern about artificial intelligence. The Pope said that artificial intelligence can cause divisions and fear to spread if it is used carelessly. He said that people can lose their connection to reality if they depend too heavily on digital simulations. This can lead to isolated groups, and reduce meaningful interaction between people. African natural resources: a concern He also criticised the high demand for Africa’s natural resources. The Pope emphasized minerals such as cobalt which is widely used for modern technology, including AI. He said that uncontrolled mining of these resources would harm local communities and increase inequality. Faithfulness, dedication, and resiliency The worshippers were deeply involved despite the heat. Others held books or umbrellas to protect themselves from the heat. Some knelt down, prayed or lifted their hands to show devotion. It was a powerful display of unity and faith amongst people with different backgrounds. The event was described by many as an emotional experience. The next stops in Africa on the tour The Pope is on a tour of Africa. He will then travel to Angola, and finally Equatorial Guinea to conclude his journey.

Tribute at Sea for Lives Lost At the port of Arguineguín in southern Gran Canaria, the Pope paid tribute to migrants who died during their journeys. He placed a wreath of flowers into the sea and prayed in silence. His message focused on remembering those who disappeared without any trace during Atlantic crossings. Dangerous Journey Across the Atlantic Data from the UNHCR shows that arrivals to Spain by sea have decreased this year. Many still lose their lives at sea. Survivor Story from The Gambia One survivor, Bakary Jaiju from The Gambia, shared his experience of crossing the Atlantic at age 19. He traveled in a wooden boat with around 160 people including women and children. He described a journey lasting seven days with very limited food and water. Fear was constant as passengers risked falling into the sea. Jaiju said he left his family behind because he wanted to improve their living conditions, even if it meant risking his life. Rescue and Life After Arrival When the boat ran out of fuel near El Hierro, Spanish rescue teams found and saved the passengers. After arrival, Jaiju spent three difficult months in a migrant camp. Later, he joined a support program in Tenerife to learn Spanish and work toward legal residence. A local parish priest known as Padre Pepe supports migrants through community programs that help them adjust and rebuild their lives.
