Madison Police Shooting Investigation Begins
The shooting death of a man by a police officer in the US state of Wisconsin has prompted the opening of a homicide inquiry.
On Thursday, the Madison, Wisconsin, police chief informed reporters that he would assist state investigations. John Patterson declared, “We will not hide from any aspect of this investigation.“
Corey Ruiz, 38, was shot on Wednesday, according to police, after he pulled out a knife during a scuffle with four policemen.
Protests have been triggered by bystander footage of the incident that has gone viral on social media.
According to Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, the shooting will be “rigorously investigated.”
“It does not matter who you are or what your past is; you should not lose your life as a result of an encounter with law enforcement,” she said.
The shooting will be looked into by the Criminal Investigation Division of the state Justice Department because police officers were involved.
According to Chief Patterson, they will also make public the identity of the cop who fired their weapon.
At the time of the event, none of the cops were using body cameras.
According to him, the event occurred after police received a report about someone attempting to break into parked cars in the neighborhood.
Officer Fires Three Shots During Struggle
Then, according to Patterson, an officer attempted to subdue Ruiz with a taser, but it was not successful.
Ruiz was shot three times by the wounded police officer; he eventually passed away in the hospital.
According to Patterson, all of the concerned officers have been put on administrative leave.
Madison Police Shooting Sparks Outcry
During the news conference on Thursday, a group of demonstrators interrupted Patterson to criticize the inquiry and demand greater transparency.
On the same street where Ruiz was killed eleven years prior, a biracial man. Tony Robinson was shot and killed by a white police officer. In that instance, no charges were brought.
