Around 9.30 a.m. local time, the event happened at the Malaysian Navy’s Lumut Base, which is located 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of Kuala Lumpur, the country’s capital.
Seven crew members from an AW139 maritime operations helicopter and three crew members from a navy Fennec were involved in the disaster.
The navy claimed in a statement that “all the victims were confirmed to have died at the scene and were sent to the Lumut Base Army Hospital for the identification process.”
“[We] will establish a board of inquiry to identify the cause of the incident.”
The helicopters crashed were being prepared for a flyover that was scheduled to coincide with Malaysia’s 90th Naval Day celebrations.
