Meta has introduced a powerful new tool to protect Facebook and Instagram Reels creators from content theft. Named Facebook Content Protection, this system automatically detects unauthorized uploads and gives creators control over their original work.

With the new tool, creators receive alerts whenever their Reels are reposted without permission. They can then choose to:

  • Block the reel from being visible on both Facebook and Instagram
  • Track its performance
  • Add attribution links to credit the original creator
  • Or release the claim and allow the reel to remain online

Built on the same matching technology as Meta’s Rights Manager, the system tracks copyrighted content and ensures original creators get proper recognition.

Meta says creators must upload or cross-post Reels to Facebook for the tracking to function. The feature is automatically available to creators in the Facebook Content Monetization program and those meeting Meta’s originality standards, with expansion planned for Rights Manager users. Eligibility can be checked via feed notifications, the Professional Dashboard, or by applying on Facebook’s website.

The system provides detailed insights, including video match percentages, views, follower count, and monetization status. Creators can customize settings, release one-off claims, or add attribution links. A direct link to the original Reel is being tested, though currently, the default links to the creator’s profile or page.

Blocking a matched reel reduces its distribution, but the account sharing the stolen content won’t face disciplinary action. Misuse of the tool, such as submitting false claims, may lead to account restrictions or loss of access.

Tracking is on by default, and creators can file copyright takedown requests or report missed matches directly from the content protection dashboard. Currently, the feature is mobile-only, with a desktop version in testing.

This new system is part of Meta’s ongoing effort to curb impersonation, fake accounts, and content theft, ensuring creators remain in control of their work.
