According to police, 23 people have been taken into custody for their claimed roles in the lynching and death of an individual as well as the burning of the Madyan Police Station in the Swat region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials told News on Sunday.
The police added that while they work to apprehend additional people who may have been engaged in the incident, the arrested people have been moved to an undisclosed location.
This is the result of a violent mob beating a local tourist to death on Thursday night, claiming he had desecrated the Holy Quran. The mob then set fire to both the traveler’s body and the Madyan Police Station.
The dead, who was charged with blasphemy, was urged to open the door by the hotel administration, according to a federal agency’s report that was released the day before.
The report also stated that the accused had then answered the door and refuted the accusations of blasphemy; nevertheless, the police transported him to the police station, a decision that was criticized in the report for being a “serious” error.
The report also claims that the suspect was not moved to a “safe” location by the station house officer (SHO) at the aforementioned police station, nor did they follow orders from higher-ups on the subject.
