Russian Aircraft Approaches UK Carrier Strike Group
British fighter jets intercepted a Russian maritime patrol aircraft after it repeatedly flew close to the UK’s Carrier Strike Group in the Norwegian Sea. The incident happened while the British naval force was carrying out operations under NATO command near Iceland.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the Russian Bear F aircraft flew at a low altitude and came unnecessarily close to HMS Prince of Wales. Officials believe the aircraft released ten sonobuoys into the sea. These floating devices use sonar technology to detect submarines and other underwater activity.
British military personnel tried to contact the Russian aircraft using international radio frequencies. However, the crew did not respond. As a result, two F 35 fighter jets launched from HMS Prince of Wales and escorted the aircraft away from the carrier group.
UK Calls Russian Actions Unsafe
The Ministry of Defence described Russia’s actions as unsafe and unprofessional. Officials said the close approach created unnecessary risks during routine military operations in international waters.
The UK’s Carrier Strike Group includes HMS Prince of Wales, HMS Duncan, F 35 fighter jets, Merlin helicopters, Wildcat helicopters, and the support ship RFA Tidespring. Around 1,500 British military personnel are currently deployed with the task force.
This mission also marks the first time NATO has carried out air policing operations from a European aircraft carrier, highlighting the alliance’s growing focus on northern European security.
Defence Secretary Highlights Growing Threat
Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis visited HMS Prince of Wales during the deployment and praised the work of British forces.
He said the world has become more dangerous and uncertain, making international cooperation through NATO more important than ever. He added that deployments like this strengthen collective defence and improve deterrence against potential threats.
Jarvis also stated that the threat from Russia now extends across every area of modern warfare. He said the risks exist under the sea, on the surface, in the air, in space, and in cyberspace.
Military Leaders Warn of Rising Tensions
Senior British military leaders have recently warned that Russia continues to test Western defences through increased military activity. Defence officials say these actions raise the possibility of dangerous incidents if they continue without proper communication.
NATO has also warned that Russia could be capable of using military force against alliance members by 2030 if current security trends continue.
UK Strengthens Defence Spending
The interception comes shortly after the UK announced plans to increase defence investment by £15 billion. The government said the additional funding will strengthen military capabilities and improve national security, although some of the money will come from spending cuts in other departments.
The latest encounter in the Norwegian Sea reflects growing tensions between NATO and Russia as both sides continue to increase military activity across Europe.
