Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared, are purchasing the majority stake in one of the most recognizable sports clubs in the world. LA Lakers Set for Record $12.5bn Sale to Kushner and Iger In a deal that was unanimously authorized by the NBA Board of Governors in October 2025. Walter purchased his stake from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion (£7.45 billion), setting a previous record. Kushner and Iger said: “As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. “We greatly admire the vision and leadership of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. How Mark Walter Became Lakers Owner “Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.” In 1979, Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers for $67.5 million (£50 million), which also included the Los Angeles Kings hockey franchise and the Kia Forum, a Los Angeles arena. Before a contract was finalized with Walter, who also holds a part in the LA Dodgers alongside Todd Boehly, ownership was transferred to his six children in a trust upon his death in 2013. Lakers Have 17 NBA Championships “One of the greatest honors of my life has been owning the Los Angeles Lakers,” Walter remarked. The community, the supporters, and a city that views this team as family are what I will take with me, even if it has been an incredible investment. I appreciate being welcomed into this chapter by Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff. Los Angeles owns the Lakers, and I’m confident that the greatest is still to come.” The LA Lakers have won 17 NBA titles, one fewer than the Boston Celtics’ record of 18. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal regarding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned plan before the sale. How the Buss Family Owned the Lakers I am appreciative to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for allowing me to be a part of this chapter. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal surrounding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned attempt to sell private investors shares in the governing body’s competitions before the agreement. US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

She met Brian Hickerson, her new lover, just before Nashville's production concluded. Later on, he became aggressive; according to Panettiere, he would smack her head against the wall and once battered her face so severely that she was unable to leave her home for weeks. In her 36 years, she faced more challenges than most, and she tried to deal with them by writing her book, which was released in May. She concluded by assuring readers that she had learned to "walk hand in hand with my triumphs and my tragedies, because they have made me who I am" and that she had come to terms with her past while maintaining optimism for the future.

Flight diverted after boarding error raises health concern

A passenger flight traveling from Paris to Detroit was diverted to Canada after officials found that a traveler from an Ebola affected region had boarded the aircraft by mistake. US authorities said the passenger should not have been allowed to board under current entry rules.

The aircraft, operated by Air France, was redirected before reaching the United States. Authorities confirmed the decision was taken as a precaution linked to public health restrictions.

Strict entry rules triggered the diversion

The United States has placed limits on travelers who have recently been in certain African countries where Ebola cases have been reported. These rules restrict entry for people who are not US citizens or permanent residents unless they follow enhanced screening procedures.

Officials said the passenger had traveled from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where an Ebola outbreak has been reported. The country has recorded hundreds of suspected cases and many deaths during the current outbreak.

Airline and border officials respond

Air France stated that US authorities requested the diversion after the passenger was denied entry on arrival rules. The airline confirmed the flight was redirected to Montreal.

US Customs and Border Protection said the passenger was boarded in error and confirmed that immediate action was taken to prevent landing in Detroit.

The agency also explained that only approved entry points are allowed for travelers with recent travel history in affected regions.

Passenger experience during the diversion

Passengers reported confusion during the flight as the crew announced the change in route several hours before landing. Some travelers said cabin crew used protective masks after the diversion was declared.

The pilot later informed passengers that the aircraft itself had no technical issues. The change was solely related to entry restrictions enforced by US authorities.

After landing in Canada, passengers were later transported to their original destination on the same aircraft.

Ebola outbreak context and health response

Health officials have confirmed that the Ebola outbreak in central Africa has been classified as a global public health concern. International agencies continue monitoring the situation closely.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that the overall risk to the public remains low. However, additional screening measures are in place to prevent possible spread through international travel.

One confirmed Ebola case has been reported in the United States involving a medical worker who was treated abroad and is currently receiving care in isolation in Germany.

Previous Article Gonorrhoea and Syphilis Cases Reach Record Highs Across Europe STI Cases Continue to Rise in Europe Sexually transmitted infections are increasing rapidly across Europe, with gonorrhoea and syphilis reaching their highest levels in more than a decade. New data released by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control revealed a sharp rise in reported cases during 2024. Health experts say the growing number of infections is linked to gaps in testing, prevention, and awareness. Officials are now urging people to take sexual health more seriously and get tested regularly. Gonorrhoea Cases Surge by More Than 300% According to the latest figures, Europe recorded 106,331 gonorrhoea cases in 2024. This marks a massive 303% increase compared to 2015. Syphilis infections also rose sharply, reaching 45,557 confirmed cases during the same year. The number has more than doubled over the last decade. Medical experts warn that untreated sexually transmitted infections can lead to serious health problems. Gonorrhoea may cause infertility and chronic pelvic pain, while syphilis can damage the heart, brain, and nervous system if left untreated. Congenital Syphilis Cases Raise Concern Health officials also highlighted a worrying rise in congenital syphilis. This condition occurs when an infected mother passes the disease to her baby during pregnancy. Cases of congenital syphilis nearly doubled between 2023 and 2024. Doctors say the infection can cause lifelong complications for newborns, including organ damage and developmental issues. Bruno Ciancio, head of the Directly Transmitted and Vaccine Preventable Diseases Unit at the ECDC, stressed the importance of prevention and early testing. He advised people to use condoms with new or multiple partners and seek medical testing if symptoms appear. Spain Reports the Highest Number of Cases Among participating European countries, Spain recorded the highest number of confirmed gonorrhoea and syphilis infections in 2024. The country reported 37,169 gonorrhoea cases and 11,556 syphilis cases during the year. The report also showed that men who have sex with men remain the most affected group, with the fastest long term increase in infections. At the same time, syphilis cases among heterosexual women of reproductive age also increased significantly. Chlamydia Remains the Most Common STI Although chlamydia remained the most commonly reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection in Europe, cases slightly declined. Authorities recorded 213,443 chlamydia cases in 2024, representing a 6% decrease since 2015. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom continues to monitor its own sexual health data separately after Brexit. According to the UK Health Security Agency, England reported 71,802 gonorrhoea cases and 9,535 syphilis cases in 2024. The country also confirmed 168,889 chlamydia diagnoses during the same period. The UK introduced a gonorrhoea vaccination programme in 2025 after infection rates reached record levels in previous years. Why STI Prevention Matters Health experts say regular testing, safe sexual practices, and better public awareness remain the most effective ways to control the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Doctors recommend using protection during sexual activity, avoiding unprotected sex with multiple partners, and seeking medical advice immediately if symptoms develop.
