Ukraine Calls for Stronger Air Defense Support
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on NATO allies to provide advanced air defense systems as Russia continues to launch heavy missile attacks across Ukraine. Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Zelensky said Ukraine can manage many parts of its defense, but it urgently needs stronger air protection from its international partners.
He stressed that additional air defense systems are essential to protect civilians and critical infrastructure from Russia’s increasing missile strikes. According to Zelensky, stronger international support will help Ukraine defend its sovereignty and save lives.
Kyiv Faces Another Wave of Deadly Missile Strikes
Zelensky’s appeal comes after Russia carried out two major attacks on Kyiv within a week. Several residential buildings were hit, leaving more than 50 civilians dead and many others injured.
The repeated strikes have raised concerns about Ukraine’s ability to intercept ballistic missiles. Although Ukrainian air defenses continue to destroy most incoming drones, recent missile attacks have exposed serious gaps in the country’s defensive capabilities.
Officials reported that none of the ballistic missiles launched during Monday’s attack were intercepted, highlighting the urgent need for more advanced defense equipment.
Zelensky Expected to Meet Donald Trump
During the NATO summit, Zelensky is also expected to hold an important meeting with United States President Donald Trump. He plans to argue that Russia’s continued attacks show desperation rather than military strength.
The Ukrainian leader hopes stronger international pressure will encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to enter meaningful peace negotiations. Zelensky has repeatedly said Ukraine wants a fair and dignified peace while protecting its independence.
Ukraine Increases Long Range Drone Operations
At the same time, Ukraine has expanded its own long range drone campaign against Russian military targets. Ukrainian forces have reportedly struck oil refineries, fuel storage facilities, and military infrastructure deep inside Russia.
These operations have reportedly caused fuel shortages and temporary power outages in several Russian regions. The attacks demonstrate Ukraine’s growing ability to target strategic locations far beyond the front lines.
Russia Claims to Intercept Hundreds of Drones
Russian officials stated that air defense units intercepted most of the hundreds of drones launched toward Moscow overnight. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the capital remained protected, although authorities have not fully confirmed the extent of any damage.
Meanwhile, videos circulating on social media appear to show long queues at petrol stations in parts of Russia, with reports of limited fuel supplies in some areas.
NATO Reaffirms Support for Ukraine
Before the summit, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged member countries to increase their support for Ukraine. He said allies must do their part to help Ukraine defend its sovereignty and maintain pressure on Russian forces.
Rutte also noted that Ukraine’s recent military operations have changed conditions on the battlefield. However, he acknowledged that stronger air defense remains one of Ukraine’s most urgent military needs.
