Tensions between Ukraine and Russia have intensified after Ukraine accused Moscow of ignoring a self declared ceasefire and launching a fresh wave of drone and missile attacks. Ukrainian officials said several cities were targeted, raising concerns about civilian safety and ongoing instability along the front line.
President Volodymyr Zelensky described the situation as a clear rejection of efforts to reduce violence and protect lives. He said Russia continued military operations despite the announced pause in fighting.
Competing Ceasefire Announcements
Both countries recently announced separate ceasefire plans without agreeing on shared conditions or monitoring systems.
Russia proposed a temporary truce around May 8 and May 9 to mark Victory Day celebrations. Ukraine responded with its own open ended ceasefire starting Tuesday midnight and stated it would mirror Russia’s actions.
Despite these announcements, both sides continued to report attacks and accuse each other of breaking the proposed pause.
Civilian Casualties and Sumy Region Strike
One of the most serious incidents occurred in the Sumy region, near the border. Local authorities reported that a kindergarten building was hit during a morning attack, resulting in the deaths of two people. Officials confirmed that no children were inside at the time.
Ukraine also reported that a series of strikes on Tuesday caused multiple civilian deaths across the country, including significant losses in Zaporizhzhia.
Ukrainian leaders called the attacks deliberate and aimed at civilian infrastructure, increasing pressure on international calls for de escalation.
Political Reactions and Accusations
President Zelensky stated that Russia was prioritizing military celebrations over human life. He also noted increased air defence deployment around Moscow, suggesting that resources were being concentrated to protect the capital.
Ukraine’s foreign minister accused Moscow of using ceasefire language for public messaging while continuing military operations on the ground. Russian authorities, meanwhile, have warned of security threats during upcoming national events and have restricted some public services for safety reasons.
Moscow Victory Day Context
Russia is preparing for Victory Day commemorations, including a major military parade in Moscow. Authorities have reportedly reduced the scale of events this year due to security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict.
Mobile internet disruptions have also been announced in major cities, with officials citing precautionary measures.
