Gunfire and Tension Grip Philippine Senate
Panic spread across the Philippine Senate after gunshots were heard during an operation linked to the arrest of Senator Ronald dela Rosa. Security forces quickly locked down the area while armed troops surrounded the Senate building, creating a tense political standoff.
The incident began after authorities attempted to enforce an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Dela Rosa. The senator reportedly urged supporters to stop officials from taking him into custody.
The dramatic confrontation has increased political tension in the Philippines and sparked fresh debate about accountability for the country’s controversial anti drug campaign.
Who is Ronald dela Rosa?
Dela Rosa served as the national police chief under former President Rodrigo Duterte from 2016 to 2018. During that period, he became one of the leading figures behind the government’s war on drugs.
The anti drug campaign led to the deaths of thousands of suspected drug dealers and users. Human rights organizations accused police forces of carrying out unlawful killings and targeting poor communities. Authorities denied those accusations and defended the campaign as a necessary fight against crime.
The ICC later opened an investigation into possible crimes against humanity connected to the operation.
ICC Arrest Warrant Deepens Political Crisis
The ICC unsealed an arrest warrant for Dela Rosa earlier this week. The warrant came months after Duterte himself was arrested and transferred to The Hague in 2025 to face legal proceedings connected to the same investigation.
After learning about the warrant, Dela Rosa sought protection inside the Senate building. He also appealed to the Philippine Supreme Court to stop local authorities from cooperating with the ICC.
Despite the request, the Supreme Court refused to issue a temporary order blocking the enforcement of the warrant. That decision increased pressure on security agencies to move forward with the arrest.
Duterte’s Drug War Still Divides the Philippines
Duterte withdrew the Philippines from the ICC during his presidency in 2019. However, the court argued it still had legal authority over alleged crimes committed before the withdrawal took effect.
Investigators also examined killings linked to Duterte’s time as mayor of Davao City, where he built his tough image against crime and drugs.
The latest developments have once again divided public opinion in the Philippines. Supporters of Duterte and Dela Rosa claim the ICC investigation interferes with national sovereignty. Critics argue the victims of the drug war deserve justice and accountability.
