Overview of the Beijing summit
Donald Trump said he avoided making any commitment on Taiwan during recent talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. The discussions took place over a summit that lasted two days and focused heavily on trade, security, and regional tensions in Asia.
Trump said Taiwan came up several times during the meetings. He described the conversations as direct and serious, especially on military and political issues linked to the island.
Taiwan question raised by Xi Jinping
According to Trump, Xi Jinping asked directly whether the United States would defend Taiwan in the event of conflict. Trump said he chose not to give a direct answer.
He stated that he told Xi he does not publicly discuss that kind of commitment. Trump also said Xi expressed strong opposition to any movement toward Taiwanese independence and warned that the issue remains highly sensitive for China.
Xi reportedly cautioned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead to serious confrontation between the United States and China.
US arms sales to Taiwan under review
Trump also said the United States is reconsidering previously announced weapons sales to Taiwan. The package, valued at around eleven billion dollars, includes rocket systems and missile equipment designed to strengthen Taiwan’s defense capability.
He said no final decision has been made yet and added that he plans to speak with Taiwan President Lai Ching te before moving forward.
Trump indicated that the review will be completed in a relatively short time frame, but did not give exact details on timing or conditions.
Ongoing US China Taiwan tensions
The United States has long supported Taiwan with defensive military supplies while maintaining an unofficial stance on its political status. This approach has helped Washington balance relations with both Taipei and Beijing.
China continues to view Taiwan as part of its territory and has increased military activity near the island in recent years. These actions have raised concern in Washington and among regional allies.
At the same time, the United States is legally required to provide Taiwan with tools for self defense, which keeps arms sales and military support a recurring point of tension with China.
Trump comments on conflict risk
Despite the sensitive discussions, Trump said he does not expect a military conflict between China and Taiwan. He added that Xi Jinping also does not want to see war over the issue.
Trump described the talks as firm but not hostile, suggesting that both sides want to avoid escalation even while disagreeing on Taiwan’s future.
