Thailand Tightens Tourist Visa Rules
Thailand has announced major changes to its visa-free travel policy for visitors from more than 90 countries, including the UK, the US, Australia, India, and several European nations. The government has decided to reduce the visa-free stay period after concerns about national security and misuse of the system.
Since July 2024, tourists from 93 countries could stay in Thailand for up to 60 days without needing a visa. The policy aimed to revive tourism and strengthen the economy after the Covid pandemic. However, Thai authorities now believe the system needs stricter control.
Under the new rules, many travelers will only be allowed to stay for 30 days without a visa. Anyone planning to stay longer may need to apply for a visa before traveling.
Government Says Security Concerns Led to the Change
Thai officials explained that the previous system created confusion because several countries had overlapping visa exemptions. Authorities also raised concerns about illegal activities involving foreign nationals.
In recent months, Thailand has seen several high-profile criminal cases linked to foreigners. Some cases involved drug smuggling, illegal employment, and human trafficking investigations.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the government reviewed the policy to make it more suitable for the country’s current economic and security situation.
Thai police recently raided an unlicensed international school in Bangkok and arrested several foreign workers who reportedly lacked legal work permits. Authorities say stronger visa rules could help reduce such cases in the future.
New Visa Rules Will Start Soon
Thailand’s foreign ministry confirmed that the updated visa policy will become official 15 days after its publication in the Royal Gazette.
The government also stated that future visa-free periods may vary depending on agreements between Thailand and individual countries. Some nationalities could receive shorter or longer stays based on reciprocal arrangements.
Countries affected by the change include the UK, China, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Australia, India, and the United States.
Tourism Remains Important for Thailand
Tourism plays a major role in Thailand’s economy. Before the pandemic, the country welcomed nearly 40 million international visitors in 2019. Visitor numbers dropped sharply during Covid restrictions but have improved steadily over the past two years.
Official figures show that almost 12 million tourists have already visited Thailand this year. Despite the new visa limits, the country remains one of Asia’s most popular travel destinations because of its beaches, culture, nightlife, and affordable tourism options.
Experts believe the updated visa policy may help Thailand balance tourism growth with stronger immigration control and national security.
