A day after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the Pacific nation’s capital Port Vila, killing 14 people and destroying hospitals, embassies, and commercial buildings, rescuers in Vanuatu looked for individuals buried beneath debris on Wednesday.
In a video message, Vanuatu Police Commissioner Robson Iavro stated that over 200 people were hurt and that rescue efforts were concentrated on two buildings that had collapsed.
He claimed that three individuals who were stranded in a collapsed building were corresponding with rescuers.
According to Iavro, “we believe there are more stuck inside,”
Social media footage revealed landslides close to Port Vila’s international shipping terminal, stones scattered across a highway, and cars buried beneath the rubble. People were lining up for necessities and fuel, according to national television VBTC.
