A week after a Himalayan town was carried away and buried in mud by a lethal wall of freezing water, Indian officials say at least 68 people are still missing.
It raises the probable total death toll from the August 5 tragedy to above 70, on top of the four confirmed deaths.
Survivors’ videos showed a horrifying wave of muddy water washing away blocks of multi-story apartments.
On Tuesday, disaster officials announced that they were looking for bodies among the debris of the Uttarakhand state vacation town of Dharali.
When “digging started, water came out from below,” according to National Disaster Response Force member Gambhir Singh Chauhan, sniffer dogs had found multiple locations that suggested a body.
