The UK is preparing for another extremely hot day, with temperatures expected to reach 35C in several areas. The ongoing heatwave will continue until the end of next week, bringing high temperatures, health warnings, and water supply concerns across the country.
Millions of people in southern and eastern England are now facing hosepipe restrictions after four water companies introduced bans. Other suppliers are also keeping a close watch on their water levels as dry conditions continue.
Record Breaking Heat Across the UK
The recent hot spell has already broken previous temperature records. On Thursday, temperatures went above 34C for the eighth time this year, beating the previous record of seven days set in 1976 and 2020.
The record increased further on Friday when Coton in the Elms, Derbyshire, recorded a high of 34.7C. The extreme heat has made this one of the hottest periods the UK has experienced in recent years.
Highest Temperatures Expected in England and Wales
On Friday, the hottest weather moved towards western parts of the UK. Areas including Berkshire, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, and eastern Wales faced temperatures of around 34C to 35C.
Thursday saw the highest temperature of 35.5C recorded at Wisley in Surrey.
Other parts of the UK also experienced unusually warm weather. Bute Park in Cardiff recorded 31.3C, Charterhall in Scotland reached 29.3C, and Killowen in Northern Ireland reported 27.5C.
Warm Nights Add to Heatwave Concerns
The hot weather continued overnight, with five locations in southern England experiencing tropical nights. This happens when temperatures remain above 20C throughout the night.
The highest overnight temperatures included:
• Heathrow, London: 21.3C
• Cippenham South Water Works, Berkshire: 21.2C
• Kenley, Surrey: 20.6C
• St Catherine’s Point, Isle of Wight: 20.5C
• Northolt, London: 20.3C
Experts warn that warm nights can increase health risks, especially for older people, young children, and those with existing health conditions.
Cooler Weather May Arrive Soon
Some relief could arrive during the weekend as a north easterly breeze brings cooler air across parts of the country. Eastern areas may feel less intense heat as winds change direction.
However, heat health warnings remain active across large parts of England until 21:00 BST on Sunday. Officials continue to advise people to stay hydrated, avoid long periods in direct sunlight, and take extra care during the hottest parts of the day.
Water Restrictions Affect Millions
The combination of high temperatures and dry conditions has increased pressure on water supplies. Around five million people could be affected by hosepipe bans introduced by water companies in England.
Residents in affected areas must avoid using hosepipes for activities such as watering gardens, washing cars, or cleaning outdoor areas. Water companies are asking people to reduce unnecessary water use while the heatwave continues.
UK Heatwave Outlook
Weather experts expect the hot conditions to continue through next week, although temperatures may vary across different regions. With heatwave conditions still affecting many areas, people are being encouraged to follow health advice and prepare for more warm days ahead.
