George Santos, a former Republican congressman, was found guilty of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft and received a sentence of more than seven years in jail.
Last August, the 36-year-old entered a guilty plea to the federal charges in a New York court.
Santos’s lawyers had urged that he serve two years, the minimum term for aggravated identity theft, while the prosecution had sought 87 months, or seven years, in prison.
The sentencing is the last straw for the inexperienced New York politician, who was kicked out of Congress after it was claimed in the fraud case that he had misrepresented his credentials and embezzled campaign cash to support his lavish lifestyle.
