TEHRAN: The enormous explosion at Iran’s largest commercial port, which claimed 70 lives, was attributed by the country’s interior minister on “negligence.”
Two days after the explosion, firefighters are still having difficulty extinguishing the fire at Shahid Rajaee Port, which is situated in southern Iran, close to the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
In addition, more than 1,000 people have been hurt by the Saturday blast.
The governor of the province of Hormozgan, Muhammad Ashouri, acknowledged the growing death toll and said the fire was still not completely out.
The crisis management director of Hormozgan province, which is home to the port, Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, told state media, “Unfortunately, the death toll has reached 70 and the firefighting efforts are almost in final stages.”
